Aah... so the ankh symbolises life. It's good to learn some hard facts about hieroglyphs, instead of what our lousy tour guide fed us about everything representing "magic words, symbols and spells".
And yes Will, Egypt has definitely soured our view of organised tourism in general. But no, I can't blame Iain's annoyance on the Manley problem of continuous need for food - I was the one ready to loot the snack stalls! (Maybe I've been hanging around him too much...)

Great Article Claire - Was Iain's annoyance exacerbated by the Manley problem of continuous need for copious quantities of food?
Reading other articles you guys have written you don't appear to have encountered such problems when you weren't on packaged tours. Does this sour your view of organised tourism in general?

Love the title and love the article. I am hoping to get Dave to read it tomorrow. He spent a long time in Egypt (fairly long ago) and I think he will be facsinated by your observations.

How you are going to enjoy and appreciate the "simple" things in life after your travels.
So wonderful to be able to share these experiences with you from the comforts of home.

FYI: the ankh is the hieroglyph for "life" (living, etc.), the shen glyph is the symbol for "eternity."
