No clue I'm afraid, but I could hazard a guess: So that eight people could fit around it for a massage? 

My research did reveal some other interesting details though. Ottoman era hamams were originally structural elements adjoined to mosques, before they became so popular. The masseurs were young boys, recruited from the non-Muslim subject nations, who also worked as sex slaves!</description>
