I prefer "olde boy Hemingway" on Paris. He's represented on our <a href="http://www.oldworldwandering.com/?page_id=24" rel="nofollow">reading list</a>.

You should read the olde boy Hemmingway to get a real picture of Spain and how to write about it and see how it has not changed over 70 years. The antics, i.e nudes in the street are quite normal for a weekend in Barcelona and not very strange at all, Catalans have a refreshingly different view of the world. Most would think mines bigger that that one or watch out for that nasty bitting dog around the corner.

I suggest that Americans should travel more and read more history perhaps it is the path to enlightenment, now where's 1967

A great article Iain, sounds like a great place, only went there as a child so don't remember it but Claire's grandfather was very fond of Barceona.

I see you read the book I gave Claire by Brad Newsham, "Take me with you", a good travel book I think.

Thanks Steve. When I said that Spain had "no African colonies to speak of" I had carefully chosen "to speak of." Spanish Morocco no longer exists and Equatorial Guinea is a tiny country.

I meant colonies that feed back into the fabric of the coloniser, so that you are often safe assuming that Africans in the UK are from British colonies and Africans in France are from French colonies.

I know that Moroccans are all over Spain, but am I safe assuming that this has more to do with physical proximity than colonial association? North Africa and Iberia have a long and rather brutal history anyway. Do you find many people from Equatorial Guinea in Spain?

I was surprised to find Somalis in Spain, but found lots of them.

Ah, Barcelona. My favourite city! Enjoy - try to visit the two football stadia. Even if you are not a football fan the architecture is impressive.

"Spain had no African colonies to speak of."
Mmm, history lesson here I think!!!

A little gift for you for posting and for everybody else for reading!
