As usual, eminently readable! Being a Capetonian myself, I am thrilled that you describe the landscape (and your ancestory) in terms of the Mother City. Our travel community has a fair amount of data concerning Scotland, but amazingly no details about the Isle of Skye. Perhaps you would care to register and share some of your experiences with us?

You know, we've been there twice and it's one of our absolutely favorite trips, we LOVE, no we ADORE Scotland!!!!!

Once we took the steam train from Fort William to Mallaig and back again. It was like being thrown back in time - every boys childhood's dream *lol* - the steam train which they used in the Harry Potter Movie, passing over the famous Glenfinnan viaduct.

We're out on Skye too. A wonderful island.

But the highlands, absolutely stunning.....

*dreaming*

A delightful article Iain. You have a wonderful way of balancing delight and cynicism, past and present, the serious and the playful.
It is fun to imagine what the clerk at the Peterculter Town Council made of it all. It certainly must have made her day a little different. Poor Claire, what a birthday! However, in years to come, the discomfort will be forgotten and the story often told, I’m sure.
Your photographs are lovely.
